Free miners are the first to encounter the Formics as the aliens head toward Earth with unknown intent. This follows the stories of a couple of the miner families and a corporate entity who must put aside their differences to warn the Earth of the aliens’ impending arrival. The encounters they have indicate that the aliens could be hostile (they definitely are when humans attempt to sabotage their ship). Efforts to communicate with Earth are hindered by interference from the aliens’ ship, the loss of several waystations, and, of course, bureaucracy. Gets bogged down in places with repetitious drama, but fans of “Ender’s Game” will be curious about how things all began. Published for adults. High school teens may also enjoy.
