This book will forever be a classic in my opinion. It’s a standard in which all books should be written by, and overall had great twists and turns in it. I have read the Harry Potter series before a couple of years ago, but I’m deciding to reread it and re-watch the movies. Now that’s just my opinion on the books, but the illustrations are a whole different story! Jim Kay, the man who did them, also did the illustrations for “A Monster Calls,” which just shows how good he is. I think that the pictures give an extra element to the story, especially the sorting hat one, because I never imagined it that way! LOVE THIS BOOK! (reviews the illustrated edition)

In a world full of muggles there are secretly witches and wizards everywhere. The book starts with Mr. Dursley finding strange happenings on the way to work. He notices people in cloaks everywhere, cats doing strange things, and whispering wherever he is there. That night, Dumbledore meets McGonnagal outside of the Dursley home, along with Hagrid, informing them that Voldemort has killed Mr. & Mrs. Potter, but not their son, Harry. Dumbledore leaves Harry on the Dursley’s porch with a note. 10 years later we learn what Harry’s life with the Dursleys is like. At the zoo on Dudley’s birthday, the glass in front of a boa constrictor exhibit disappears, frightening everyone. Harry is later punished for this incident. Then mysterious letters start arriving for Harry, which the Dursleys don’t allow him to open. He learns on his 11th birthday that he is the orphaned son of 2 powerful wizards, Lily and James Potter. Harry also has magical powers of his own. He is then invited to Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches. Will Harry be able to avoid Voldemort’s wrath? Will Harry be able to control his powers?
This book was a big part of my childhood, as I was super intrigued by Harry’s world. I loved the characters in this book.
For upper elementary kids and middle school readers.

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling follows the story of Harry Potter, a young boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard. Living with his cruel aunt, uncle, and cousin, Harry’s life changes when he receives a letter inviting him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At Hogwarts, Harry makes new friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and discovers that his parents were killed by the dark wizard Voldemort. As Harry dives deeper into the magical world, he learns about the Sorcerer’s Stone, an object that grants immortality. Harry discovers someone’s plot to steal the Sorcerer’s Stone. Will Harry find the Sorcerer’s Stone before his enemy does? Will Harry be able to survive? Read the book to find out!
This book is super iconic because it is the introduction to the Harry Potter series. I liked how J.K. Rowling developed the characters, making readers care about Harry and his friends. The detailed descriptions of the magical world, from Diagon Alley to the moving staircases at Hogwarts, were interesting and brought the story to life. However, some parts of the book were predictable. Despite this minor issue, this book was a great read that will start your love for the Harry Potter series. For upper elementary and middle school readers.
