Huntley Area Public Library District—Head of Marketing 

The Huntley Area Public Library District, a busy, mid-sized suburban library serving a population of approximately 44,000 citizens in and around the Village of Huntley, Illinois (a far northwest suburb of Chicago), is seeking a Head of Marketing to help us fulfill our mission to the community we serve.

What we need: 

Overview: Responsible for managing library publicity, public information, brand identity, seeking out alternate funding sources, crisis communication (if needed), preparing grant proposals and state reports, and related duties in cooperation with other staff. Internally and externally, promotes use of and understanding of the library’s mission, services, procedures, and policies. 

The successful candidate must have knowledge of library technology, strong organizational skills, and must be able to work collaboratively with staff and other managers. This position reports to the Library Director and has a leadership role in the library. 

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Develops and implements annual and long-range marketing plans to promote community awareness of library services and programs 
  • Creates and organizes timely library public relations and publicity in all formats, such as social media posts, email messages, news releases, newsletters, presentations, displays, flyers, and other promotional materials 
  • Acts as library public relations representative with media, community organizations, and other forums 
  • Builds partnerships between the library and other businesses, organizations, and public entities; represents the library at community meetings including governmental meetings 
  • Organizes library-wide promotions and special events 
  • Oversees library participation in community events 
  • Establishes good working relationships with media representatives and relevant vendors 
  • Researches and develops grant proposals with Director and staff input. Follows through with grants to ensure completion, proper paperwork, filing, and reports 
  • Collaborates with Friends Foundation on fundraising for the library, including special programs, direct appeals, grant writing, and planned giving 
  • Completes reports for filing with the Illinois State Library, State of Illinois, and federal government 
  • Gives presentations on library services to community groups in cooperation with other staff 
  • Takes photographs of library services for publication, displays, and distribution to the media 
  • Responsible for maintaining collection of library publicity, publications, and photographs 
  • Manages Marketing Department staff 
  • Participates in professional activities and attends approved workshops and conferences 
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Proven track record for fundraising and grant writing 
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and remain calm in difficult situations 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when appropriate 
  • Ability to interview, select, and train staff 
  • Experienced and knowledgeable using various marketing platforms including Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and similar products 
  • Experience working with various AI tools for marketing purposes 
  • Ability to interpret library policies in a diplomatic and sensitive manner 
  • Ability to transport library materials and displays to other sites

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represent the physical and environmental demands of this position: this position requires approximately equal amounts of time spent standing, walking, and sitting. Lifting, pushing/pulling, and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds is sometimes required. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and bending are sometimes required. Repetitive movements of the hands and arms are sometimes required. Audio, visual, and verbal functions are essential to performing this position. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or similar field 
  • A total of at least three years of successful experience in the field of marketing and fundraising, preferably for governmental or non-profit agencies 
  • Two years of management or supervisory experience preferred 
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong leadership and project management skills 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 

Schedule 

40 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends required
