Huntley, IL – The Huntley Area Public Library was honored to receive a donation from the Huntley Area Lions Club in the amount of $1000.00. The donation was presented to the library by Jim Saletta and Jim Graves of the Lions Club in honor of American disability rights advocate Helen Keller. Keller influenced Lions Club members to join her and continue her crusade as Knights of the Blind. Helping the visually impaired has been a cause for the group since 1925.
The donation will be used to purchase new Dell 27-inch monitors. These larger monitors will soon be available for all Huntley Area Public Library patrons to use with the library’s public computers. Most importantly, they will make it easier for visually impaired patrons to perform their computer-based tasks.
Huntley Area Public Library Director Frank Novak said, “We are thrilled that the Lions Club selected our library to be a part of their ongoing mission to aid and support those with vision, hunger, environmental, and diabetes issues. These new monitors will allow our patrons to increase the screen size to 2560 × 1440 pixels compared to the 1920 x 1080 currently available on our 22-inch screens, that’s over 170%, and that will greatly benefit our visually impaired users”.
The Lions Club will be honoring Keller for this year’s Helen Keller Day on June 25th, 2022, at the Huntley Farmer’s Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Town Square celebration will include:
- Vision and hearing tests for adults and children
- Demonstrations of Braille machines and technology
- Visit with a guide dog and learn about their experiences from their owner
- Sign language demonstrations
- Practice writing and decoding Braille
The Huntley Area Public Library’s mission is to Provide Endless Opportunities to the Huntley Area Community. Recently reopened after a 21,000 square foot addition and a 15,000 square foot renovation, the library continues to work with and appreciates the support of community organizations, local businesses, and the community members that make our growth possible.
