15 year old John Wayne Cleaver is a sociopath and he is obsessed with serial killers. While he finds them fascinating, he’s also concerned that he might become one, so he comes up with rules he has to follow in order to keep that part of himself locked away. When a series of murders are committed in his own small town, John is uniquely placed and qualified to identify and stop the killer. But he knows that doing so will unleash his own inner monster, so he has a bit of a dilemma. Fascinating read with some very detailed depictions of dead bodies and mortuary science (John’s mom and aunt own a mortuary business and he often helps out with the embalming process), so if you’re squeamish, maybe not the book for you. Teens who are a little young for the Dexter books (adult series by Jeff Lindsay), but who love horror, may enjoy these. Supernatural twist! (Also, it’s a series!) For high school teens.
