When Jess’ family sends him to train at the great Library of Alexandria, Jess is thrilled that he’ll be able to indulge in his passion for books and learning, though it puts him into conflict with his family’s shady business (which involves smuggling rare books and the black market). The training is difficult and there are only 6 places for qualifying students. Jess makes friends among the other trainees, but it becomes clear that they all have secrets and the Library and its Magistrates have even more. When war causes one of the Library’s branches to shut down, the students are sent on a mission to rescue a cache of rare books. Their journey is perilous and offers a convenient excuse for “accidents” to occur. When all is over, friends are lost and their ideals are shattered, but Jess is determined to find justice for himself and the others, and his efforts may either revolutionize or destroy the Library.

An exciting series opener, exploding (literally) with danger and action. Readers will be eager for the next installment.
