Huntley Area Lions Club Makes Donation to Huntley Area Public Library for Large Print Books
The donation assists the community by satisfying one of the Lions Club’s five pillars of service—vision.
Huntley, IL—On Friday, March 29, members of the Huntley Area Lions Club presented Huntley Area Public Library Director Frank Novak and Head of Marketing Doug Cataldo with a check for $500.00 to assist in the future purchase of large print books for library patrons.
The generous donation comes at a time when the library has seen an increase in prices for large print items since 2018. Stemming from a paper crisis and a rise in the cost of other materials needed to produce a book, in some cases, the increase has been nearly 40%.
Lions Club President Mary Meyer stated, “This is a wonderful way to give back to the community and work with our local library while meeting one of our pillars of service.”
The Lions Club has previously worked with the library to provide an Optelec ClearView desktop video magnifier for our patrons with impaired vision.
As vision is one of the five pillars of the Lions Club’s service, their goal is to continue to champion Helen Keller’s crusade as Knights of the Blind. The group has supported this cause since 1925. In addition to vision, the other pillars are hunger, diabetes, cancer, and the environment.
Novak was thrilled with the donation and said, “The Lions Club has been a supporter of the library since day one. It is always an organization that has the best interest of the community in mind, and their generosity continues to be appreciated, especially with the rise in the cost of these large print materials.”
Funds will be used to purchase new, large print books before the close of the 2023-24 fiscal year. With a large population of 55+ in the Huntley Area Public Library District, large print materials are very popular with patrons, especially those with low vision.
The Huntley Area Public Library’s mission is to “Provide Endless Opportunities to the Huntley Area Community.” The library continues to work with and appreciates the support of community organizations, local businesses, and the community members who make our continued success possible.
