Jess Brightwell, now part of the Library’s High Garda, is on a quest to discover the whereabouts of his friend Thomas, who disappeared after the Archivist Magister learned of the plans for his secret printing press. With the help of friends (Glain, Khalila, Dario, Morgan, and their teacher Scholar Wolfe and his partner Captain Santi), Jess hopes to uncover Thomas’ location and free him. Along the way, they learn that the Library is deadly serious about keeping control over any information disseminated to the masses, doing so by secreting away any works it deems dangerous or forbidden in the mythical Black Archives (do they actually exist, and if so, where?), and discouraging people from asking too many questions. Those who come to the Library’s attention often meet with fatal accidents. If their rescue mission is successful, they will have to flee and find a safe harbor outside of the Library. An exciting installment in the Great Library series! Jess puts his early training as a smuggler to good use.
