In “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard, Mare Barrow lives in a world divided by blood; those with red blood are commoners, while those with silver blood possess superhuman abilities and rule as the elite. Mare, a red-blooded girl, discovers she has a powerful ability usually only seen in Silvers. This discovery puts her into the dangerous world of the Silver elites. As she is forced to play the role of a lost Silver princess, Mare becomes a symbol of rebellion for the oppressed Reds. Caught between her old and new life, Mare must decide where her loyalties lie as tensions rise.
I loved how Mare is a relatable and strong protagonist in “Red Queen”. The plot is very unique and interesting, keeping the readers on the edge of their seats. The book’s plot made it stand out from other books and the dystopian setting makes it even more captivating. For middle and high school teens.
