“Scythe” follows the story of 2 protagonists: Citra Terranova and Rowan Damisch. The book starts within Scythe Curie’s gleaning journal where she explains the history of their civilization and how humans became immortal and created the Scythedom – an organization of Scythes. The Scythes are trained to “glean,” which is killing humans for population control. The book progresses with Scythe Faraday appearing at Citra’s house. Usually this is a sign that the Scythe is going to glean someone, but Faraday admits that he is going to glean their neighbor. After that Scythe Faraday appears at Rowan’s school to glean a student named Kohl Whitlock. Rowan shows compassion and holds Kohl’s had while he is gleaned. The rest of his classmates then shun Rowan. Faraday invites both Citra and Rowan to become his apprentices, and they accept, however, only one of them will get to be a Scythe.
I just recently read this book, and I loved it! I enjoyed the concept that Neal Shusterman brought, and how this book brings in the themes of mortality and life.
For high school teens and adults.
