The book “Shadow and Bone” follows the protagonist, Alina Starkov, a teenage orphan who grows up in Ravka (based in Russia) and becomes a soldier who fears going on a trek across the Shadow Fold. She suddenly is able to harness an unexpected magical power she never knew existed to save her childhood friend, Mal (short for Malyen). She soon becomes a target of violence as numerous people try to obtain her magical power.

I enjoyed this book since I mainly enjoy the genre of fantasy, and this book was all about fantasy. I love the way the author provides imagery and space for visualization, which makes the story’s characters come to life. This book really had me thinking and had me on the edge of my seat! A downside of this book is that there are a lot of romance scenes, so I would recommend this book to people over the age of thirteen. Adults an also read this book due to the content of the book and the amazing plot of this book, which can intrigue adults. There is also a series on Netflix based on the Shadow and Bone series, called “Shadow and Bone.” Definitely, after you read this book, you could get into the series! Another downside of this book was that the chapters were choppy, but other than that, this book was amazing!
