Tally is almost sixteen and she can’t wait. In a couple of weeks she will have the “pretty” operation that will turn her from an ugly into a beautiful pretty. As a pretty, Tally will be sent to a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun. Tally’s new friend Shay doesn’t want to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally must retrieve her, or Tally will never become pretty at all. Will Tally find Shay and become pretty or will she stay with Shay and her friends in an unknown world? Tally’s choice will change her life forever.

* * * * * Stars (Amazing!)
The plot of the novel is set in a dystopian society that is controlled by physical appearance. Everyone under the age of 18 is referred to as “uglies,” because they are not able to undergo procedures to enhance themselves physically. Some of these surgeries include eye alterations, facial tattoos, and hair alterations. The main problem of the novel is a girl who refuses to get any alterations done to her physical appearance. The result is both an attack on herself and society.
